HO2S Heater Control Circuit High (Bank 1 Sensor 1)

Low· Fix when convenientDIY friendlyPowertrainGeneric, all makes

What it means

The oxygen sensor heater control circuit at Bank 1 Sensor 1 is reading high voltage, usually a heater shorted inside the sensor or a control wire shorted to voltage. This is the upstream oxygen sensor on bank 1, mounted before the catalytic converter. It measures oxygen in the exhaust so the ECU can keep the fuel mixture correct. Bank 1 is the side of the engine with cylinder 1 (on 4-cylinder engines there is only bank 1).

Is it safe to drive?

Safe to drive. It mainly affects emissions and cold-start economy.

Symptoms

  • Check engine light on
  • Repeatedly blown O2 heater fuse in some cases

Probable causes

Most likely first

  1. 1Heater shorted inside the sensor
  2. 2Control wire shorted to battery voltage

How to diagnose it

Work through these in order before buying parts

  1. 1Record the code and its freeze frame data (speed, load, temperature when it set), then clear it and see if it comes back.
  2. 2Measure heater resistance; a very low reading (under about 1 Ω) means a shorted heater.
  3. 3Inspect the harness for melted insulation where wires may be touching.
  4. 4Check for technical service bulletins (TSBs) or software updates for your make and model; some codes have known factory fixes.

Common fixes

  • Replace the oxygen sensor
  • Repair shorted wiring

This information is general guidance for all makes. Exact causes, specifications and procedures vary by vehicle, so confirm with your service manual or a qualified mechanic before replacing parts.
